Synopsis :
Ketika sebuah bom meledak di sebuah perumahan yang dihuni banyak warga AS di Riyadh dan merenggut ratusan korban, anggota FBI Ronald Fleury tanpa persetujuan pemerintah AS ngotot membentuk sebuah tim kecil dan berangkat ke Saudi Arabia untuk menyelidikinya. Di Riyadh tim Fleury yang beranggotakan Grant Sykes, Adam Leavitt, dan seorang cewek Janet Mayes dibantu oleh pihak kepolisian setempat dibawah pimpinan Kolonel Faris Al Ghazi. Walau bertujuan sama yakni menemukan dalang dibalik pemboman ini perbedaan kultur kedua kubu ini sempat membuat suasana menjadi tegang. Ghazi membantu tim Fleury untuk melobi pihak Kerajaan dan akhirnya berhasil mencurigai sebuah kelompok perakit bom yang diketuai Abu Hamzah. Apakah tim Fleury berhasil menemukan tempat persembunyian Hamzah dan apakah orang2 Hamzah cuma tinggal diam saja?

Tipikal sebuah film action dengan genre Good American vs. Bad Middle East Terrorist. Wow nyaris mirip dengan plot serial 24 season 2 yak. Cuma di awal film kok pace nya lambat banget, kayaknya beberapa adegan gak perlu bisa dihilangkan. Tapi sedikit sentuhan komedinya bolehlah. Jamie Foxx cukup berhasil membawakan karakter sebuah pemegang komando, sementara Chris Cooper agak tenggelam. Jennifer Garner yang sudah terlatih dengan film action juga cocok sekali dengan perannya meskipun porsinya agak kurang banyak. Well adegan yang paling kusuka di film ini adalah Jennifer vs the fat terrorist. Gak usah dijelasin deh mending liat sendiri. Adegannya lebih seru ketimbang adegan kejar-kejaran dengan mobil di awal pertigaan film. Dengan opening weekend $17,5 juta pada akhir september lalu, The Kingdom agak kurang laku di Amrik, sampai minggu kemaren baru mengumpulkan $47 juta. Tapi tahun ini boleh dibilang The Kingdom termasuk salah satu film action paling seru, sedikit dibawah Die Hard 4.0 imho :D

Semula dikenal sebagai aktor, kini Peter Berg lebih dikenal sebagai seorang sutradara. Debut penyutradaraannya adalah sebuah film komedi hitam A Very Bad Things yang dibintangi oleh Christian Slater dan Cameron Diaz. Dilanjutkan dengan aksi komedi The Rock, The Rundown, dan drama olahraga yang dipuji banyak kritikus film, Friday Night Lights. Kini, Berg yang sempat nongol dalam film besutan Michael Mann, Collateral, dipercaya untuk menggarap sebuah film aksi thriller pertamanya,dimana Mann menjabat sebagai produser. Sekali lagi Jamie Foxx bekerja sama kembali dengan Mann setelah Ali dan Miami Vice. Foxx berperan sebagai agen Ronald Fleury, sementara tiga anggota timnya, Janet Mayes, Grant Sykes, dan Adam Leavitt, masing-masing diperankan oleh Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Chris Cooper (Jarhead), dan Jason Bateman (The Break Up). Didukung oleh Jeremy Piven (Serendipity) sebagai Damon Schmidt serta Ashraf Bahroum (Paradise Now) sebagai Kolonel Faris AlGhazi.

Berg nampaknya berusaha menghadirkan sebuah film aksi thriller tanpa bermaksud menyentil agama tertentu. Cerita pun berjalan netral, malahan hubungan antara Kolonel Faris dan Fleury cukup menarik untuk disaksikan. Sementara dari segi akting, nampaknya para bintang bermain dalam taraf biasa-biasa saja. Patut diacungi jempol adalah set design film ini mengingat bahwa sebagian besar disyut tidak di lokasi aslinya (Saudi Arabia). Adegan aksi pun dibalut dengan cukup baik oleh Berg, lihat saja klimaks film yang menyajikan adegan yang akan membuat Anda terhenyak di tempat duduk Anda, sayangnya film sempat melempem di pertengahan, tetapi secara keseluruhan The Kingdom merupakan film aksi thriller yang cukup baik.

Bagi Anda para penggemar film aksi thriller bermutu, maka The Kingdom bisa saya rekomendasikan untuk Anda tonton. Deretan pemainnya serta inti ceritanya yang cukup menarik bisa menjadi acuan Anda untuk menonton film ini.

Peter Berg's "The Kingdom" is a thrilling movie, that's out of the question. The problem is that it doesn't really know whether it primarily wants to be an action movie or a political comment.

It starts out well enough. The gripping opening montage documents the connection between the U.S.A. and Saudi Arabia and sucks you right into the story. The first act plays out as a very good depiction of terror in the middle east. In the second act the movie loses some of its pace and we get to know the characters a bit more. What's really off-putting is that the Americans come across as constantly joking, relaxed, but at the same time totally competent people. It's the old "cowboy"-image Hollywood has always tried to convey in its war movies from the 80's, that should really have been left behind by now. It's not a fatal flaw, but it definitely prevents the movie from becoming more than just an action flick set in the middle east.

This becomes more apparent in the final act, which starts with a car crash and continues with countless shootouts. The movie goes way over the top from this moment on and turns into something Jerry Bruckheimer might have thought up. Technically the action scenes are developed pretty well (I don't share the common criticism of other reviewers that the shaky cam distracted too much. I'm not a fan of it usually, but here it was alright). In its best moments the action looks like something out of "The Bourne Ultimatum", in its worst the movie could be "Shooter".

What separates "The Kingdom" from "Shooter" is its message, though. The very last lines spoken in the movie redeem Berg of a lot of the mindless action that preceded it. After all, the makers apparently did want to make some kind of statement and this last comment really hits home. Other than that you don't find much of a message in "The Kingdom". Just because the movie doesn't glorify the U.S.A. at any point, doesn't exactly make it critical. It's merely neutral, which is more than can be said about most American action movies dealing with terrorism. There is one questionable scene, in which a police man from the middle east and the main character, an FBI agent played by Jamie Foxx, seem to agree that it would be best to simply execute the masterminds behind terroristic acts without asking any further questions. On the other hand, this can just be seen as the realistic depiction of what those characters would feel, because I don't think that either would be a big defender of a terrorist's rights.

In the end "The Kingdom" is a straightforward action flick with enough critical undertones to not be propaganda. It's a very exciting thriller to watch, but except for the final scene there's nothing really thought-provoking here.
