11 Things we just learned about Prince

Pretty much everyone alive in the ‘90s knows about Prince’s infamous name change. Here’s 11 things you might not have known about the artist currently known as Prince.

1. He’s a Jehovah’s Witness.

Baptized in 2001, the Purple Rain star is a devout Jehovah’s Witness. And he even goes door-to-door! In October 2003, a woman in Eden Prairie, Minnesota opened her door to discover the famously shy artist standing in front of her home. He introduced himself as Prince Nelson and came inside along with his bassist, former Sly and the Family Stone member Larry Graham.

2. Prince is his real name.

Born to two musical parents on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Prince Rogers Nelson was named after his father’s jazz combo.

3. He’s written a lot of hit songs for other artists.

In addition to penning several hundred songs for himself, Prince also composed music for other artists, including “Manic Monday” for the Bangles, “I Feel For You” for Chaka Khan, and “Nothing Compares 2 U” covered by Sinead O’Connor.

4. His symbol actually had a name.

Even though the whole world referred to him as either The Artist or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, that weird symbol Prince used was actually known as “Love Symbol #2.” It was copyrighted in 1997, but when Prince’s contract expired at midnight on December 31, 1999, he announced that he was reclaiming his given name.

5. His sister sued him.

In 1989, Prince’s half-sister, Lorna Nelson, sued him, claiming that she’d written the lyrics to “U Got the Look,” a song from his ninth studio album that features the voice of pop artist Sheena Easton. After a long court battle, a judge finally sided with Prince.

6. He ticked off the Vice President’s wife.

After purchasing the Purple Rain soundtrack for her 11-year-old daughter, Tipper Gore—wife of Clinton vice president Al Gore—became enraged over the explicit lyrics of “Darling Nikki,” a song that references masturbation and other graphic sex acts. Gore felt that there should be some sort of warning on the label and formed the Parents Music Resource Center, which pressured the recording industry to adopt a ratings system similar to the one employed in the movies. To Prince’s credit, he didn’t oppose the label system and became one of the first artists to release a “clean” version of explicit albums.

7. He lost a child.

Prince’s son, Gregory, was born in November of 1996. Tragically, he died just one week later from a rare genetic condition called Pfieffer Syndrome, which affects to growth of the skull. Prince and his then-wife, Mayte Garcia, refused to discuss the incident publicly and divorced in August of 2000.

8. He’s a little like Willy Wonka.

In 2006, Universal hid 14 purple tickets—seven in the US and seven internationally—inside Prince’s latest album, 3121. Fans who found a purple ticket were invited to attend a private performance at Prince’s Los Angeles home.

9. He simultaneously held the number 1 spots for film, single and album.

During the week of July 27, 1984, Prince’s film Purple Rain hit number one at the box office. At the same time, “When Doves Cry,” was holding the top spot as both an album and a single. Talk about the best week ever.

10. He effed up SNL.

During Prince’s first appearance on Saturday Night Live, he performed the song “Party Up” and sang the lyric, “Fightin’ war is a such a f*ing bore.” It went unnoticed at the time, but in the closing segment, Charles Rocket clearly said, “I’d like to know who the f* did it.” This was the only episode of SNL where the F-bomb was dropped twice.

11. He had a spiritual epiphany.

In 1987, Prince was due to release “The Black Album.” However, mere days before it was scheduled to drop, Prince scrapped the whole thing, calling it “dark and immortal.” (It’s supposedly also really terrible.) The musician claims to have reached this decision following “a spiritual epiphany.” Some reports say that it was actually an early experience with drug ecstasy, but maybe The Artist just knew it would flop.

Fiat apologizes to China for TV ad for new car

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian car maker Fiat has apologized to China over a television commercial featuring Hollywood actor Richard Gere and a reference to Tibet.

China is a huge market for car makers which, like other multinational companies, go out of their way to avoid upsetting the country's sensibilities about certain issues out of fear of reprisals such as a boycott of their products.

Tibet has become a focal point for protests against China's rule over the mountainous province ahead of the Olympic Games in Beijing in August.

"Fiat ... has recently been advised that certain advertising ... could disturb the sensibility of the people within China," the company said in a statement on Friday.

"Fiat Group extends its apologies to the Government of the People's Republic of China and to the Chinese people."

The company made the apology after Chinese media reported on the commercial but a spokesman said the ad would not be pulled.

China has come under criticism from human rights activists including Gere for the way it has handled violent unrest in Tibet, which seeks autonomy from the country.

Gere is a high-profile supporter of the Tibetan cause with close ties to the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader viewed by China as a traitor and instigator of the unrest.

Fiat's apology comes after Christian Dior pulled ads from Chinese stores featuring Sharon Stone after the American actress suggested the earthquake that hit the country in May could have been the result of bad karma over Tibet.

The Fiat ad features the Delta, a new car under the Lancia brand. It can be seen on the website www.youtube.com, with Gere driving from Hollywood to Tibet, where he steps out to make handprints in the snow with a child.

Keira Knightley doesn't mind being naked for sex scenes

Keira Knightley has revealed that she really isnt fazed by the prospect of bearing her flesh in front of the cameras. It seems viewers have a rather sexy scene to look foward to in her new film 'The Edge of Love'.

British actress Keira Knightley has apparently got no problem stripping off in front of the camera. The 23-year-old happily took off her bra for a sex scene with Cillian Murphy in 'The Edge of Love'. Knightley said: "It was very simple. It was a sex scene and I never like them when they've got bras on. So when asked I said, ‘alright then’."
This would not be the first time that Knightley has got her kit off for the cameras. She had previously starred in some hot scenes in 'Domino' and 'Atonement'.
Singing, is however a completely different kettle of fish for the actress. She had previously expressed her reluctance to sing in 'The Edge of Love' but is now set to receive singing lessons for her role of Eliza Doolittle in the remake of 'My Fair Lady'. Knightley is determined to get good enough and perform the movie's classics such as 'The Rain in Spain' and 'Wouldn't it be Loverly?'. 'My Fair Lady' is due to begin shooting in 2010.

Prince William turns 26

Prince William is celebrating his 26th birthday after an eventful year which saw him earn his RAF wings and rekindle his relationship with Kate Middleton.

The couple separated in April last year but within a few months there were rumours the pair were attempting to get back together.

When a concert in memory of his mother - Diana, Princess of Wales - was held at Wembley in July, Miss Middleton joined him in the royal box, although they did not sit together.

Later that year, they were pictured together for the first time, and over the last six months they have appeared at a number of high-profile events - adding to speculation that the couple are to announce their engagement.

The Prince is an officer in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals regiment and at the start of the year spent four months with the RAF and earned their coveted wings.

He is on a two-month attachment with the Royal Navy and is coming to the end of basic training with the service.

Paris and Best Buddies Bite Into Big Apple

Paris HiltonThe spotlight-hoggin' hotel heiress helicoptered from Manhattan to the Hamptons yesterday to shoot her searching-for-a-best-friend MTV reality show. She and the remaining contestants were chauffeured in Cadillac Escalades to the Estate, a private Sag Harbor manse owned by nightlife impresarios Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum.

After enjoying a couple hours of lunch and some poolside lounging, they 'coptered back to Manhattan.

Later in the night—with cameras in tow—they trekked to Tenjune at about 12:30 a.m. and stayed till about 2 a.m. Believe it or not, Ms. Hilton kept things mellow by laying off the booze and drinking Snapple antoxidant water for most of the evening. (Let the pregnancy rumors begin—again!)

Also maintaining control were the show's producers, who were trying to keep a lid on things and not reveal who the contestants were in the club. "All of a sudden there were a ton of girls everywhere, so you didn't know who was who," an eyewitness said. "You really had no idea what they were doing. Paris stayed in one spot, danced, hung out and then left."

Hilton's boyfriend, Benji Madden, was by her side looking fresh as a daisy.

And no wonder! On Wednesday night, Madden was at philanthropist Maria Bell's L.A.-area estate for Cartier's LoveCharity Bracelet shindig. A source tells me Madden took a shower at Bell's place before leaving because, he explained to the host, he was about to jump on a plane to New York to meet up with Hilton. Cleanliness is next to godliness—and next to Paris.

John Mayer Slams Guitar Hero

John Mayer

John Mayer has slammed the Guitar Hero videogame phenomenon - claiming it makes it too easy for untalented people to enjoy the instrument.

The singer claims no game could ever replicate the joy he gets from playing the guitar for real, and urges fans to grab a real axe and learn to play for real.

Mayer tells RollingStone.com, "Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it. And having done both, there's nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?"

'Boomblox' And 'Echochrome' Offer Pure Fun

BoombloxFor hardcore gamers, controlling a video-game character is second nature. You use one joystick to run, use another stick to look around, press the right trigger to shoot and use various buttons to open doors, take cover or talk to other characters.

It all seems so obvious that I'm surprised when someone else of my generation doesn't get it. My brother-in-law, for example, is an experienced hunter and golfer - but he has trouble firing a gun or swinging a club in virtual reality. Perhaps game controls have just gotten too complicated.

A game like ''Grand Theft Auto IV'' is designed for die-hards who can drive, shoot and talk on a cell phone (virtually, that is) simultaneously. After a few hours, though, you long for something simpler, where you're only doing one thing at a time. Such simple pleasures should be part of any gamer's diet, especially if you want to play with friends who aren't as hardcore.

-''Boom Blox'' (Electronic Arts, for the Wii, $39.99): This is the first fruit of a much ballyhooed collaboration between EA and Steven Spielberg, but if you're expecting an Indiana Jones-style spectacle, you'll be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're seeking a fun-for-the-whole-family experience, ''Boom Blox'' delivers.

The core gameplay involves one action: throwing a ball at a pile of blocks. Some blocks disappear when you hit them; other cause explosions or fireworks. Most of the time the object is to knock over the entire structure, but you may be limited to a certain number of balls or score more points for hitting particular blocks. There's also a Jenga-like game in which you want to remove as many blocks as possible before the tower topples.

For such a simple concept, ''Boom Blox'' has a lot of variety, with dozens of single-player puzzles and a good assortment of lively multiplayer modes. The graphics are sharp and colorful, and the physics - the way the blocks tumble and fall - seem dead-on. It's one of the Wii's best party games, accessible enough for just about anyone. Three-and-a-half stars out of four.

-''Echochrome'' (Sony, for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, $9.99): In this age of ever more realistic computer graphics, you wouldn't expect to see a game made up entirely of black-and-white line drawings. But beneath the bare-bones appearance of ''Echochrome'' lies a game that's unusually challenging and sophisticated.

Each level is a three-dimensional maze, with the ideal path typically blocked by bottomless pits or impassable gaps. The trick is that you have to rotate the maze, changing your perspective so that disconnected paths connect and obstacles are hidden. For example, if you move a post in front of a hole, the hole essentially ceases to exist, so your character can slide right across it.

It's quite trippy, reminiscent of the M.C. Escher posters decorating many a dorm room. (The designers have acknowledged the debt to Escher.) The elegant graphics combine with a mellow violin soundtrack to create a weirdly soothing experience, even though some of the mazes are quite difficult. ''Echochrome'' demands a kind of thinking that video games usually don't require, and it's the most distinctive puzzle game in years. Three-and-a-half stars.

-''Lost Cities'' (Sierra, for the Xbox 360, $10): Here's a fast-moving card game that should appeal to Xbox Live players who have grown weary of ''Uno.'' The 60-card deck has five colors, each with three ''investment'' cards and the numbers 2-10. The object is to build ''expeditions,'' starting with investments and working up through higher numbers. Sounds simple, right?

The twist is that if you start an expedition but don't make much progress, you lose points. Ideally, then, you want at least four cards of the same color before embarking, but of course that isn't always possible. Designed by German board-game legend Reiner Knizia, ''Lost Cities'' offers a balanced mix of luck and strategy.

A game only takes about five minutes, which feels a little unsatisfying. And it hasn't yet attracted a big crowd of Xbox Live fans, so it can be difficult to find online competition. ''Lost Cities'' doesn't appear to have the staying power of last year's ''Catan,'' another electronic version of a German game, but it's a decent diversion if you only have a little bit of time to spare. Two-and-a-half stars.

Celine Dion Tops Worst Rendition List

Celine Dion Canadian singer Celine Dion's has received an undesirable accolade - she is responsible for the worst cover song in history.

The My Heart Will Go On diva's cover of heavy rockers AC/DC's track You Shook Me All Night Long has been deemed "musical offensive" and placed atop a chart of the worst ever covers compiled by industry publication Total Guitar magazine.

British girl groups Sugababes and Girl's Aloud's cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way took the number two spot on the shameful round-up, with Irish boy band Westlife's take on Extreme's More Than Words coming third in the poll.

More successful covers were also honored, with the magazine voting Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower the best in a list of classic covers, closely followed by the Beatle's rendition of Top Notes' Twist and Shout track and Guns N' Roses take on the Wings' Bond Track Live and Let Die was positioned at number three.

'Get Smart' Gets Audience With $39.2M Debut

Get SmarLOS ANGELES (AP) - Audiences still get Maxwell Smart. Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway's "Get Smart," the Warner Bros. big screen update of the 1960s spy sitcom, raked in $39.2 million to debut as the No. 1 weekend movie, according to studio estimates Sunday.

But movie-goers did not get Mike Myers' "The Love Guru," the weekend's other new wide release. The Paramount Pictures comedy about a self-help mentor took in just $14 million to open at No. 4.

In limited release, "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" opened strongly with $222,697 in five theaters, averaging $44,539 a cinema, compared with $10,012 in 3,911 theaters for "Get Smart."

"Kit Kittredge," released by Picturehouse and based on the popular line of American Girl dolls, stars Abigail Breslin as a 9-year-old aspiring newspaper reporter during the Depression. The film expands into wide release July 2.

The weekend's No. 2 spot was a photo finish between DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda" and Universal's "The Incredible Hulk."

In its third weekend, "Kung Fu Panda" pulled in $21.7 million, raising its domestic total to $155.6 million. "The Incredible Hulk" was right behind with $21.6 million in its second weekend to lift its total to $96.5 million.

"Panda" and "Hulk" were close enough that their rankings could change when final numbers are released Monday.

Hollywood's summer surge continued, with total revenues climbing for the fourth straight weekend compared to last year. The top 12 movies took in $136.9 million, up nearly 10 percent from the same weekend in 2007, when Carell's "Evan Almighty" opened at No. 1 with $31.2 million.

The industry is on track to beat the revenue record set last summer, when receipts topped $4 billion for the first time.

"While the country may be suffering with a so-called recession, people are finding movies a fairly inexpensive way to get their entertainment," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "This proves the conventional wisdom that, during tough economic times, the movies flourish."

In "Get Smart," Carell re-creates the bumbling Max Smart character created by Don Adams, with Hathaway playing the capable Agent 99 as the duo try to stop a plot to arm unstable governments with nuclear bombs. Dwayne Johnson co-stars as a superstar spy colleague.

Critics picked apart the movie for emphasizing action over the crisp verbal comedy of the TV show, but Warner Bros. figures that was a wise commercial move. While 60 percent of the audience was 25 or older, that still meant a sizable younger crowd that was more keen on the movie's action, said Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution.

"We were very pleased to have 40 percent under 25, because they did not grow up on the television show," Fellman said. "The filmmakers did a great job in making that happen. They broadened the audience and brought it into a modern-day bent."

Myers — who dreamed up the "Love Guru" character, co-wrote the script and was a producer on the movie — has been accustomed to blockbuster openings with the three "Shrek" flicks and his two "Austin Powers" spy sequels.

"Mike Myers, the master of the spy spoof, opens his movie against a spy comedy, and the spy movie genre was obviously a lot more appealing to audiences," Dergarabedian said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Get Smart," $39.2 million.

2. "Kung Fu Panda," $21.7 million.

3. "The Incredible Hulk," $21.6 million.

4. "The Love Guru," $14 million.

5. "The Happening," $10 million.

6. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," $8.4 million.

7. "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," $7.2 million.

8. "Sex and the City," $6.5 million.

9. "Iron Man," $4 million.

10. "The Strangers," $1.9 million.

Review by Arddhe on Exodiac :

Harry Potter Devotees Put Wizard Tales To Music

Harry PotterPOTOSI, Mo. (AP) - Jen Leffler first escaped into the world of Harry Potter as an adolescent in suburban Chicago. A decade later, the love affair continues. Only now, it means taking road trips to concerts across the country.

Inspired by the characters and story lines from J.K. Rowling's intricate fantasy world, hundreds of bands devoted to the Potter experience have formed in recent several years.

The genre has its own name (wizard rock) and fashion sensibility (checkered scarves and askew neck ties replicate the Hogwarts school uniform) as well as a do-it-yourself aesthetic (most acts book their own shows).

With a decidedly youthful and literate audience, bands such as Draco and the Malfoys, Tom Riddle and Friends and the Moaning Myrtles are as likely to gig in public libraries, bookstores or church basements as at rock clubs.

But the movement has grown big enough to support its own summer festival circuit. On Memorial Day weekend, more than 300 devotees gathered at a YMCA summer camp lodge in the Ozark foothills for Wrockstock 2008, a wizard rock extravaganza featuring 15 bands over three days.

Later this summer, similar events will happen in New York, Chicago and even De Pere, Wis., near Green Bay.

"A lot of people don't have a lot of friends where they come from," said Leffler, who plans to move to Louisville to join a friend she first met online in a wizard rock discussion forum. "And then they find 200 friends here."

While the band names and lyrics pay homage to Rowling's elaborate fictional universe, the music is all over the map, from pensive singer-songwriters with acoustic guitars to blue-eyed soul and banjo-inflected country.

"People might assume that music based on Harry Potter would be kind of gimmicky and shallow," said Matt Maggiacomo, the one-man band known as the Whomping Willows.

Harry PotterMaggiacomo, 29, is a veteran of the Providence, R.I., music scene. But it wasn't until he discovered wizard rock that he was able to quit his day job as technical writer and focus on music full time. A crowd of 500 rapt listeners attended his first show.

"This was my first show where everyone was focused on the music," he said. "A lot of times (before), there were 15 people in the crowd, and they were focused on getting drunk, or talking to other people."

The Missouri festival attracted fans from as far away as Scotland, Wales, Quebec, British Columbia and South Africa — many of whom were visiting the country for the first time.

Forget about New York or the Grand Canyon. For those first-time visitors, the wizard rock community is the real attraction, said festival organizer Abby Hupp.

"They come here and have a sense of belonging," she said. "If you see that even total strangers will love you, it changes you. You become a more open, happy person."

At Wrockstock, the music came with a message. The merchandise table had not only concert T-shirts and compact discs but bracelets calling for an end to genocide in Darfur and literacy-promoting bumper stickers.

As founder of the nonprofit Harry Potter Alliance, Boston resident Andrew Slack taps into the wizard rock world to promote social activism among what he calls the real-world minions of Dumbledore's Army, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry student group that rose up to fight intolerance and defend the teachings of their wise professor of the same name.

"Literature has in recent decades been a solitary experience," said the 28-year-old former sketch comedian. "But it can also be a communal one."

For Slack, that means voter registration booths at wizard rock concerts, or flyers alerting audience members to the threat of media consolidation or global warming.

"We're taking the messages of art and putting them into the real world in a tangible way," he said.

With all seven Potter books now complete, some wizard rock fans fear that the scene could be short-lived.

"There's only so much you can sing about now that it's over," Leffler said.

Yet with three more movies (the seventh and final book will be made into two films) and Florida theme park still on the horizon, most Potter acolytes don't expect the cultural filament to burn out anytime soon.

"I don't think it's going to last forever," said Slack, who didn't read his first Potter book until after graduating from Brandeis University in 2002. "But the Harry Potter fan culture is never really going to go away."

Rare Marilyn Monroe Footage Fetches $60,000

Marilyn MonroeLAS VEGAS (AP) - Candid footage of Marilyn Monroe on the set of her last completed film brought in $60,000 at an auction of movie memorabilia Saturday.

The two reels of silent, 8-millimeter color film shot on the set of "The Misfits" had been expected to draw starting bids of between $10,000 and $20,000. The auction also included the original disco ball from "Saturday Night Fever" and an original script of "The Godfather" signed by Marlon Brando. The sale was held by Julien's Auctions at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

The 47-minute film, "On the Set with 'The Misfits,'" was shot by film extra Stanley Floyd Kilarr. It features candid moments with Monroe and co-star Clark Gable, as well as Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter and director John Huston. The film shows actors preparing for scenes, chatting with crew members and others on the set, and relaxing between takes. "The Misfits" was the last completed film for both Monroe and Gable.

Gable had a fourth heart attack just after filming was finished and died Nov. 16, 1960, about two months before the movie's U.S. release. Monroe died Aug. 5, 1962. Cathy and Rod McCormick, of Sparks, Nev., obtained the film canister from her father, Frank Hasy, Kilarr's uncle.

Items sold early Saturday included a suit worn by Elvis Presley in the film "Viva Las Vegas," which drew a bid of $36,325. Alfred Hitchcock's driver's license sold for $8,000, and an original "King Kong" French film poster sold for $40,625, according to the auction officials.

Anna Nicole Smith's former boyfriend Larry Birkhead attended the auction and spent nearly $3,000 on lingerie once worn by the late Playboy playmate. Birkhead said he was picking up mementos for the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Dannielynn.

Spider-Man 4? You're Gonna Have to Wait

SpidermanLos Angeles - Looks like everyone's favorite web-slinging superhero is slowly weaving his way back to the box office. Very slowly.

Laura Ziskin, producer of the blockbuster movie franchise starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, told theater owners from California and Nevada on Thursday that Spider-Man 4 won't hit theaters until at least 2011.

She said there is no script yet and neither Maguire nor director Sam Raimi have signed on.

Spider-Man 3 opened in 2007 to mixed reviews, although that didn't stop the film from grossing a record $59 million its first day out of the gate.

The first three Spidey flicks combined have grossed a whopping $2.5 billion worldwide

Tanpa Bra, Pamela Anderson Akhirnya Lolos Audisi
